Council of Europe’s Ministers to discuss ignored decision of ECHR over Romanian-language schools in Transnistria
The problem of non conformance with the ECHR decision on the Romanian-language schools in the Transnistrian region will be examined by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on March 4-6, 2014. A decision in this case was announced by the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR on October 19, 2012. The High Court recognized the violation of the right to education admitted by the Russian Federation. The court ruled that plaintiffs be given by way of moral damages, 1 million and 20 thousand euros and 50,000 euros for costs of representation.
“Although we have a European Court’s ruling that establishes clear violation of the right to education in Transnistria, High School students and teachers of “Stefan cel Mare” in Grigoriopol continue to travel the 80 km to be able to study in their mother tongue. At the same time, other educational institutions are subject to systematic intimidations from the illegal administration of Tiraspol,” said Ion Manole, executive director of “Promo-LEX”.
Previously, the CoE Committee of Ministers adopted a declaration calling on the Russian authorities to provide relevant information quickly, in the form of an action plan and report on the execution of this case. It has led to increased pressures from the illegal local authorities on the Romanian high schools in the region’s.
